Umm...Bea Arthur died on Saturday. Am I the only who thought that the Golden Girls were immortal? Sad day.

Well I would like to share my favorite Bea Arthur clip with you, but it's just a bit too much for some folks I would say. Celebrity Roast anyone? I loved how they got her and Betty White to sit in on a couple of those.

Enjoy a fun sing along on me.

biggest loser and rollerblades

I definitely haven't mentioned this yet. Not sure why. The fam and I (excluding my teeny tiny sis) are participating in the White Family Biggest Loser. We've all joined Weight Watchers online complements of Papa White, and we actually have our "weekly meetings" via video chat on stickam.

The broseph and I are trying to keep the parentals in the know as far as technology goes. Not hard since he's a software enginerd, and I'm a wireless/electrical enginerd. We basically cover the general scope that is technology. Ha. Dork. I'll keep you posted on how the competition goes.

SO...in spirit of just being healthy in general, I went to Academy Sports today to buy some new attire, tennis balls, and just to peruse. While perusing I decided it would be a great idea to check out the skates section.

I tried on a few different pairs of rollerblades, took them for a spin up and down the aisle, and was literally about 100 ft away from purchasing them. I decided to look into the purchase a little more. No spur of the moment this time. I'm such the grown up these days (she says about her decision to hold off on the rollerblades...for now).

I will say this. Rollerblades aren't the cheapest commodity, but what better way to take me back to the childhood days. Maybe I'll even hit up the skate center near my house. You heard me. I'll be sure to keep you posted on this as well.

Are we in an economic depression? Because I'm definitely spending all of my money on the anti-essentials. I say that like I usually spend it on all of the right things.

check it

I totally just bought bike shorts. Yea! Check out this hotel in Austria.

I think staying here is now on my bucket list.

julia nunes being awesome as usual

Julia Nunes rocking the burbs with Ben Folds. Love it.

I have missed her both times she's come down South due to work. Thanks grown up life. I figure third time will be the charm. Isn't it always?

Guilty Pleasures 101

My current guilty pleasure: MTV's Taking the Stage

Have you seen this show? I am loving it. Yes it does follow high school seniors, but they are attending SCPA which is a performing arts school in Cincy, and they are all super talented. Some famous SCPA alumni: Sarah Jessica Parker, Nick Lachey and bro Drew (98 degrees anyone?), and Carmen Electra. How random.

Nick Lachey is actually the producer of the show, and I say props to him. I could care less about the drama element of the show, but all of the dancing, singing and performing is awesome.

On the most recent episode, Mia Carruthers (video above) who falls into the singer/songwriter category fo sho sang "Winter Song" for their winter concert. I am now obsessed with this song and wish I had known about it sooner. No worries though because I've been catching up by listening/singing it every minute of the day. I found myself bum bum bumming at the gas pump today. Thanks Sarah and Ingrid. Oh and Mia. Yes. We are all on a first name basis.

Bonus video...just push play. Possible spoiler alert: The girl taping it says smell ya later twice. Dumbass.

Denied

I just called the IRS to get some of my tax information from last year, and apparently I answered some of the questions wrong so...they did not let me through. Awesome. The guy was like so you missed a number (not just one) of these questions, and I can't give you any information. At least security is tight.

The Past Four Days

Please forgive my sentence fragments, but I don't really feel like piecing sentences together.

Wednesday: Slumdog Millionaire. Awesome. Love loved it.

Thursday: Site visits all day in Nash. Sounds opening night game. Took a good 15 minutes to park once in the parking lot...in between two cars in compact parking spot. Stressful. Kid got hit in head with baseball bat. Slung from other team player. Fireworks!

Friday: Boss in town. Bad weather/tornado warnings galore. "Worked" aka rearranged my desk until 6:30. Relaxed and went to bed early.

Saturday: Shopped and cleaned. Tried to fix leaky faucet outside. Failed. Need more tools.

Sunday: Easter! Did first Easter in Nashville and alone. Not too bad but missed the fam. Successfully video chatted with brother, mom and dad...all at one time.

Oscar Week

I know what you're thinking. Beth, you idiot, that was over a month ago. Well I say to you a) you are right and b) was idiot necessary?

The reason this is Oscar week for me is I've decided to watch some of the movies that were up for big nominations this year. I've already managed to watch Rachel Getting Married which might I add was quite the depressing movie so don't go into it thinking "Anne Hathaway is in it...it will be cute." No.

Last night: Started watching The Reader. I read the book and know what happens so I decided to cut the movie short when I knew it was about to get pretty serious. I'll finish it up this weekend.

Tonight: Slumdog Millionaire. I'm excited about this one. I mean it is the Best Picture of 2009. It should have some substance to it.

Then I'll probably wrap up the week with some Proof and Curious Case of Benjamin Button action. Who knows?

Man on Wire

Okay. I mentioned this in my last blog as a highlight to my weekend. Well my broseph does the whole blockbuster movie deal, and he decided to go with a documentary for one of his recent rentals.

Man on Wire is a documentary about a wire walker who attempts to walk between the World Trade Center's twin towers. I know right? It happened in the mid 70s. The general layout of the movie is two stories...one focuses on the actual Twin Towers story, and the other is the story of how he got to that point.

It was kind of bittersweet because some of the documentary covered the construction of the towers (not in detail). It was weird to see the actual construction of the buildings that are now gone.

Here's the actual summary per IMDB...

On August 7, 1974, Philippe Petit, a French wire walker, juggler, and street performer days shy of his 25th birthday, spent 45 minutes walking, dancing, kneeling, and lying on a wire he and friends strung between the rooftops of the Twin Towers. Uses contemporary interviews, archival footage, and recreations to tell the story of his previous walks between towers of Notre Dame and of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, his passions and friendships, and the details of the night before the walk: getting cable into the towers, hiding from guards, and mounting the wire. It ends with observations of the profound changes the walk's success brought to Philippe and those closest to him.

Anyways, if you are looking for a good documentary, I would definitely recommend this one. It was very interesting, and apparently it won best documentary in 2008. The trailer is below.

Randomness

So this weekend was great fun with the fam. Here are some highlights: lunch with the sis, Easter egg hunt, jumping on the tramp, coach pitch baseball, Apples to Apples, my grandad's bday/lunch with the whole fam, Man on Wire, ladder golf, laughing my ass off with the bro (as usual) and my fave...playing with my nephews' Little People collection. So much fun. Basically I was a kid again this weekend, and it was great.

ALSO...

While discussing North Korea on Fox and Friends Sunday, they showed this clip of from Team America. I could not get over the fact that I was seeing Team America on Fox News or any channel besides the movie channels.

On my way home yesterday I decided to switch it up since I was tired of singing my heart out and didn't have any new audiobooks to listen to. So...I listened to ESPN radio and National Public Radio. This American Life happened to be the show that was on when I was pulling into Nash, and it was super awesome. Check out NPR fo sho. I had subscribed to the podcast for This American Life, but I just hadn't put it on my new Zune. I will now.

Go Bravos! They have a winning season so far at 1-0. Yesss.

Dark Skies and Blue Skies

Have you ever seen the show I Shouldn't Be Alive? If you haven't you totally should. It's out of control. Anyways, I definitely felt like I was (or should have been) on an episode of it last night. I had planned on driving down to O-town last night since driving in from Nash on a Friday normally only gives me one good day on Saturday.

I thought if I drive in on Thursday and work from home on Friday I'd gain some quality time to spend with the fam and friends. Well Mother Nature had something to say about my genius plan.

I had planned on leaving Franktown around 4 yesterday, but after finishing up a call around a quarter til I checked weather.com...tornado warning. We could hear the sirens going off but I was still hopeful. Opal Optimist ladies and gents. So I checked again about 20 minutes later...tornado warning/flood warning. It definitely wasn't looking good as far as the ETD went for me.

I finally ended up leaving around 6 which would have put me in O-town around 10:30 or 10:45ish. Little did I know that over half of the trip (from Nash to Bham) would be spent with no radio at all (by choice) and me constantly looking out different windows including the sun roof for any type of funnel cloud not to mention while being pounded by rain. I felt like an idiot/tornado chaser, and I have never been so happy to see lightning in my whole life. Everytime it struck I checked the night sky for a funnel.

Needless to say, I made it. I probably won't try that often in the future. I figure you can only be fortunate so many times. Anyways, it's absolutely gorge outside right now and I'm busy working (taking a break right now) outside. I'm coming up on a year as a TN resident, and I can definitely vouch for the fact that Alabama's skies are that much bluer (??).

Can I also mention how much I like the new Alabama car tags...the Sweet Home Alabama ones. I mean yes that is the most overplayed song of my life, but the design is so much better than the last one.

Happy weekend!

Email from the Mom

My mom is the queen of forwarding emails, so when they are short and sweet, I typically read them. Here's a recent one...

Dear Employees,

As CEO of this business that employs 140 people, I have accepted the fact that Barack Obama is our new President and that our taxes and government fees will now increase in a BIG way.

To compensate for this additional overhead, I figure that the clients will have to see an increase in our fees of about 8%, but since we cannot raise those prices right now due to the dismal state of our economy, we will have to lay off several of our employees instead. This unfortunate economic reality has really been eating at me for a while, as we believe we are family here and I didn't know how to choose who will have to go.

After giving it considerable thought, this is what I did. I strolled through our parking lot and found 11 Obama bumper stickers on our employees' cars and have decided these folks will be the first laid off. I can't think of a more fair way to approach this problem. They wanted change; I'm giving it to them.

If you have a better idea, let me know.

Sincerely,
The Boss
